Replacing the lateral rod bushings in your Mitsubishi Pajero’s rear suspension is a key step to maintaining safety, stability, and comfort. If you’re ready to tackle this straightforward repair, this guide will walk you through every step with clarity and ease. Let’s get started!

Why Replace the Bushings?

Over time, lateral rod bushings wear out due to constant movement and exposure to the elements. Replacing them ensures:

  • Enhanced Safety: Prevents suspension failures.
  • Smoother Ride: Reduces noise and vibrations.

Estimated Time: 1 Hour

What You’ll Need

Tools:

  • Jack and Jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Hammer
  • Vice
  • Soapy water

Repair Guide Step 1

Preparing Your Pajero

  1. Jack It Up Safely: Use a jack to lift your vehicle and secure it with jack stands. Raise the differential slightly to unload the lateral rod bolts.
  2. Loosen and Remove Bolts: Carefully loosen the bolts, secure the lateral rods, and then remove the rods from their position.

Removing the Old Bushings

  1. Rusty Problems? If rust is present, apply sharp impacts to loosen the bushings.
  2. Using a Vice and Socket: Secure the lateral rod in a vice. Use a socket matching the bushing’s outer diameter to press out the old bushing. A hammer can help dislodge stubborn ones.
Pro Tip: Only the rubber part may come out if the bushing is heavily worn this is normal.

Repair Guide Step 2

Prepping for Installation

  1. Orientation Check: Remember, the inner diameter of the bushings differs between the left and right sides, but the rods themselves have no specific orientation.
  2. Soak in Soapy Water: Lubricate the new bushing and arm pipe with soapy water to make installation easier.

Installing the New Bushings

  1. Position the Bushing: Insert the new bushing into the same spot as the old one. Use the old bushing as a guide if needed.
  2. Press It In: Use a vice to press the bushing into place. Apply force evenly and cautiously to avoid damaging the vice or the bushing.
