Repair Guide Step 1

Prep Your Workspace

Start by preparing your workspace. Remove the driver’s seat for easier access to the steering assembly. If you’d rather not remove the steering wheel, protect it by wrapping it with a towel to avoid scratches during the process.

Loosen the Steering Column

Locate the steering column, which is secured with two nuts and one bolt. Carefully loosen these fasteners to lower the column. Be aware of a potential obstacle: one of the bolts has a flanged design that might make removal tricky due to its contact with nearby components. You can overcome this by gripping the bolt with a vice clip and twisting it out. Reinstallation may require a slight modification to this bolt Don’t worry, we’ll cover that later.

Repair Guide Step 2

Access the Steering Assembly

With the steering column lowered, you’ll have clear access to the steering assembly. Look for the power steering motor, it’s a round cylinder located at the top left of the assembly. This is where the damper is housed.

Inspect and Replace the Damper

Carefully inspect the damper for wear and tear. In our case, after 140,000 km of use, the damper showed some scuff marks but remained intact. Replace the old damper with a new one, ensuring it’s properly aligned and securely fitted. This step is critical for restoring optimal steering performance.

Modify the Flanged Bolt

Reinstalling the flanged bolt can be challenging due to its design. To make reassembly easier, file down the flange by about 1–2 mm. This small modification will allow the bolt to slide in smoothly and ensure a secure fit.

Reassemble and Test Drive

Reassemble all components in reverse order, double-checking that everything is securely fastened. Once done, take your car for a test drive. You should notice immediate improvements, such as reduced noise and smoother steering, similar to the benefits of replacing front stabilizer links.
