In recent years rooftop tents have gained popularity among SUV owners leading many to expect this Hilux to feature one. However it stands out by not including a traditional rooftop tent or a bulky camper shell made of FRP which can be cumbersome for daily use. Instead the Hilux “FT PORTER” integrates both sleeping and living spaces directly within the truck bed offering a more practical solution for outdoor enthusiasts.

While other Hilux based campers exist the FT PORTER maintains the vehicle’s original style while enhancing functionality. Its pop up sleeping area though not as expansive as a traditional shell is designed for everyday usability. Upon reaching a campsite users can quickly set up the roof and start enjoying their outdoor experience without the need for an external ladder. The compact design minimizes overhang allowing easy maneuverability within standard parking spaces.

With a height of 2190mm the FT PORTER fits comfortably under 2.2m height regulations making it accessible for various locations. Its camper kit integrates seamlessly with the loading platform allowing it to be registered as a camper vehicle. Inside the vertical pop up roof provides an impressive 1850mm of headroom ensuring comfort for adults while the sleeping area at 750mm high accommodates two adults and one child with ease.

The design also features a sliding bed and a small gap when the pop up is folded enabling the transport of long items that wouldn’t fit in the standard cargo bed. An anti slip floor coating ensures safety and ease of cleaning making it ideal for serious outdoor adventures.

Additional amenities include a sink power source and optional solar panels enhancing its camper capabilities. For nighttime excursions LED lights can be attached to the roof’s pipe guard allowing for off road adventures after dark.

The FT PORTER is built on the robust Hilux platform featuring a front strut and rear leaf suspension system which offers exceptional off road performance not commonly found in modern SUVs. With a plethora of aftermarket parts available owners can customize their vehicles to suit their preferences expanding their outdoor experiences.

Whether you’re considering the Hilux FT PORTER or a rooftop tent for your SUV it’s essential to evaluate your needs and choose the best option for your adventures. The introduction of the FT PORTER marks an exciting new way to enjoy overland camping

Toyota’s Hilux Champ Roars into Tokyo Auto Salon 2024, Igniting Excitement with Potential Entry into Japan

In a surprising move, Toyota showcased its upcoming model, the Hilux Champ (IMV 0), at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2024 held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture. The Hilux Champ, with a total length exceeding 5 meters, generated significant buzz among auto enthusiasts at the event. This unveiling left many wondering about Toyota’s strategy behind displaying a model that has yet to be released in Japan.

The Hilux Champ, initially announced in Thailand on November 27, 2023, is the first in the IMV series, designed to stimulate the economy in the Asian region. This model stands out with its optimal blend of quality and affordability, making it accessible even in developing countries. In Thailand, the Hilux Champ is set to be priced between 459,000 baht (approximately 1.9 million yen) and 577,000 baht (approximately 2.4 million yen). It offers various configurations, including short and long wheelbases, along with three power units: 2-liter and 2.7-liter gasoline, and 2.4-liter diesel.

Although primarily targeted for commercial use, the Hilux Champ’s versatile flat deck, equipped with bolt holes, allows for various mounting options, making it equally suitable for leisure activities. The showcased vehicle featured a long wheelbase with a 2.4-liter diesel engine, providing a glimpse into its potential applications. The interior exudes a nostalgic charm with vinyl seats and simple resin-covered panels reminiscent of the early Land Cruiser 70 model.

Notably analog in its human interface, lacking even a tachometer, the Hilux Champ offers a refreshing simplicity appreciated by older generations while presenting a new and attractive aspect for younger drivers. Toyota’s decision to exhibit the model at the Tokyo Auto Salon stems from a desire to gather diverse opinions from Japanese users, exploring the feasibility of introducing the Hilux Champ in Japan.

Toyota representatives explained, “Although we have not yet decided on its introduction in Japan, we would like to collect a variety of opinions from Japanese users by displaying it here. Your feedback will serve as valuable input in considering Japan’s requirements concerning power units, size, and more.” Acknowledging safety and exhaust gas regulations as potential challenges for certification in Japan, Toyota remains open to addressing these concerns.

As part of their engagement with the audience, Toyota conducted a survey at the booth, inquiring about the preferred bodywork for the loading platform. The results of this survey will inform the creation of a new custom car, slated for display at “GPS2024 (Gunma Parts Show)” in July 2024.

With pickup trucks gaining popularity in Japan, particularly the Hilux and Mitsubishi Triton, the potential introduction of the even more reasonably priced Hilux Champ could spark a significant movement, especially among the younger demographic, further solidifying Toyota’s foothold in the Japanese market.

Groundbreaking Toyota Hilux Champ Defies Norms with 20% Price Drop Breaking Barriers

Furthermore, it was inducted into the Hall of Fame on the British public broadcaster BBC’s car show Top Gear, where it was praised for its sturdiness that withstood extreme challenges such as being dropped from the roof of a building. , and in the same program, another Hilux reached the North Pole, Toyota Motor Corporation’s venerable pickup truck that has been active all over the world. The first model debuted in 1968, and has a history of more than 50 years.

Under 2 million yen! New model “Hilux Champ” with a good sense of discretion

Toyota, a global automotive giant, has officially introduced its latest model, the “Hilux Champ,” signaling a return to the roots of its renowned pickup truck line. The Hilux, a fixture in the automotive world for over 50 years, has made its mark in pop culture, from its appearance in the 1985 movie “Back to the Future” to enduring extreme challenges on BBC’s Top Gear.

In recent years, the Hilux has seen a transformation, incorporating more comfort features and higher-quality interiors, leading to a significant increase in price. Toyota’s response to this trend is the Hilux Champ, designed to cater to customers looking for a more basic and affordable option. This new model, unveiled at the “Thailand Motor Expo” in Bangkok, is not a successor to the existing Hilux Revo but will be sold alongside it as a distinct offering.

One of the key highlights of the Hilux Champ is its pricing strategy. In Thailand, where it is manufactured, the Hilux Revo standard model starts at 564,000 baht (approximately 2.3 million yen), while the Hilux Champ comes in at a more budget-friendly 459,000 baht (approximately 1.88 million yen), a nearly 20% reduction in price. The move aims to make the Hilux accessible to a broader range of consumers.

During an on-site inspection by automotive journalist Takahiro Kudo, the Hilux Champ’s classic design immediately caught attention. Departing from the modern aesthetics of the Hilux Revo, the Champ exudes a timeless charm with its almost flat windshield and straightforward exterior panels. The grille design, resembling Lego blocks, adds a touch of casual familiarity.

Inside the Hilux Champ, cost-cutting measures are evident. The door trim, largely crafted from a single piece of resin, and the fixed passenger seat without adjustments reflect the vehicle’s commitment to simplicity. Notably, the air conditioning system, designed for practicality, lacks the option to switch the cold air outlet—a decision made to further streamline costs.

The Hilux Champ caters to a specific market, acknowledging that some customers prioritize affordability over luxury. The model’s unveiling also showcased a racing version with a full bucket seat, appealing to the popular pickup truck racing scene in Thailand.

Toyota’s Hilux Champ is not just a new addition to its lineup; it represents a strategic move to address diverse consumer needs by offering a budget-friendly, back-to-basics commercial vehicle option with a touch of classic appeal.
