In the past, different car models were sold by different dealers. Nissan Motor had Nissan, Nissan Motor, Nissan Sunny (later Nissan Satio), Nissan Prince, and Nissan Cherry dealers.
Among these, the Nissan store was Nissan’s direct passenger car dealership and handled the “”Fairlady Z,”” “”President,”” and “”Bluebird”” models. The Bluebird was the mass-market model of the Nissan dealership. In advertisements for the FAIRLADY Z, the term “”Bluebird dealership”” was used instead of “”Nissan store.
The Bluebird was introduced in 1959 (310), and the fourth generation (610) in 1971. This fourth generation model was equipped with a six-cylinder engine, and the six-cylinder model remained until the fifth generation (810), which was launched in 1976, and existed until 1979. The four-cylinder Bluebird was a successful product, but Nissan still wanted a six-cylinder model (although the President was available), so the Leopard was created based on the Maxima for North America. The Maxima itself was based on the Blue Bird, so the Leopard had the right pedigree for a model sold at Nissan dealerships. However, the development was led by Shinichiro Sakurai, the creator of the “”Skyline GT-R,”” and the blood of Prince.
The first generation Leopard was given a long nose to accommodate the six-cylinder engine and was available in two body types: a pillared four-door hardtop and a two-door hardtop. The square four-light headlights and massed grille gave the car a somewhat American flavor.
The VG30ET was equipped with two types of engines: an L6 2-liter engine, a 2.8-liter engine, and a Z4 1.8-liter engine, which was also used in the Blue Bird. The 2.8-liter engine was replaced by a 2-liter turbocharged engine, and the over 2-liter engine was discontinued, but a 3-liter V6 turbocharged engine was later added.
The second generation Leopard appeared in 1986, and the engineer who put the second generation Leopard together was Shuji Ito, who had overseen the R32 Skyline GT-R (at launch, he was Kazuo Yamaha due to transfer). The second generation Leopard was also developed based on the R31 Skyline, and only a 2-door hardtop was available; the 4-door model was discontinued.
The engines mounted on this car were all VG-type V6s, ranging from a 2-liter OHC to a 3-liter DOHC turbo engine. The stylish exterior with a thin and sharp nose using horizontal rectangular headlights and the flat instrument panel with digital meters and audio system were full of advanced design.
The second generation Leopard is famous for being used as a car in a detective drama series, but I have my doubts about such productions that gain viewer ratings by destroying cars, and I did not watch either the original broadcast or the reruns, so I will skip that topic.
The third generation Leopard underwent a major transformation when it was fully remodeled in 1992, starting with a 2-door hardtop and a 4-door hardtop, then a 2-door hardtop only, and then a 4-door sedan only. The name of the car is also changed from Leopard to “”Leopard J. Ferry””. The first generation was a Maxima-based model, the second generation was a Skyline-based model, and the third generation was a Japanese version of the Infiniti J30, which did not exist in Japan.
The bubble economy had already burst, but the aftermath was still there, and the Leopard J. Ferie was made into a luxurious car. The rounded, spacious and roomy body, which was clearly different from the first and second generation cars, was certainly controversial at the time. However, looking back on it now, one can sense an overwhelming sense of originality, and it seems as if the times have caught up with design. The instrument panel is faithful to the basics, but has a calm and sophisticated feel to it. The most noteworthy feature of the interior is the leather seats produced by Portolona Frau, a high-end Italian furniture manufacturer. The price of these leather seats, which were available as an option, was a whopping 800,000 yen.
Two types of engines were available: a 4.1 liter V8 engine and a 3 liter V6 engine. The most attractive point of the Leopard J. Ferry is the ability to enjoy the large torque of the V8 engine, and while there are many Lexus models with V8 engines, the V8 engine cars that can be obtained at reasonable prices as used cars and still have an overwhelming presence are the Leopard J. Ferry. However, when it comes to a reasonably priced used car with a V8 engine and an overwhelming presence, there is no other car that can match the Leopard J. Ferry. Considering the rising cost of fuel and the heavy taxation after 13 years of first registration, the Leopard J. Ferry requires a lot of maintenance costs, but it would be quite nice to own a car like this at least once in your lifetime.
