drivingToyota bZ4XDaisuke Ido, Toyota ZEV Factory, chief development officer of Toyota bZ4X
Driving 250km in the bZ4X and Solterra
The shift to electric vehicles (BEVs) has finally begun in earnest. Although automakers are working frantically to develop BEVs in order to realize a shift away from fossil fuels, I suspect that many people are honestly concerned about whether they can actually be used in the same way as vehicles powered by internal combustion engines, which have been used up to now. I myself am one of them. Even though I have been thinking in my heart that electric cars will be next, when I see cars waiting to be recharged at service areas on weekends and holidays, it makes me think to myself, “”This is not realistic.

It was during this time that I had the opportunity to drive the “”bZ4X”” and “”Solterra,”” which were jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Personally, I was intrigued by these two cars, and although I cannot deny the impression that Nissan, in addition to Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Porsche, and other German automakers, has beaten us to the punch, I have high expectations for Toyota because of the remarkable level of perfection it has achieved in recent years. I was looking forward to this test drive to see if I could dispel my concerns and doubts. And the fact that it would be a long drive made me even more eager for this test drive.

The bZ4X and Solterra have a range of just over 500 km per full charge, which is more than enough to meet the needs of the market, and of course they also meet the requirement to reach 80% in 30 minutes for quick recharging using CHAdeMO. However, the truth is that these are only claims to the contrary. We knew that, depending on the usage and environment, the battery would run out of juice in no time.

The course for this test ride was approximately 256 km from the Nagoya Station area to Kanazawa Station, with instructions to arrive at the vehicle transfer point with at least 200 km of driving distance remaining! The route includes some winding roads, so we had to start off on the right foot. There are some winding roads along the way, so I was anxious even before we started. However, if we were to be conservative and give priority to fuel economy, we would not be able to understand the true nature of the vehicle. Driving in a manner similar to the fuel efficiency tests often seen in the automotive media will not give you a good idea of the practical range of the car, so we decided to take the plunge and drive normally.

First, the “”Solterra”” surprised me with its straightforward handling.
The first car we drove was the Subaru Solterra AWD model. The gross vehicle weight is over 2 tons, so I was concerned about the weight right from the start. In fact, I was more concerned about the weight of the huge battery placed under the floor, which is peculiar to electric vehicles, than the actual weight of the car, which exceeds 2 tons, and I felt more resistance to driving with this mass of battery. However, it is true that the acceleration when starting from zero was more than sufficient, taking advantage of the uniqueness of an electric vehicle. My first impression was, “”It’s heavy, but I guess I can get used to it.

The body size, which belongs to the C-segment and is closer to the D-segment, is also very good in terms of visibility and handling, and the packaging is comparable to that of today’s crossover SUVs. I was surprised by the straightforwardness of the handling response. Although the weight under the floor was a concern, the car’s low center of gravity made for a surprisingly enjoyable, if not nimble, driving experience on the winding roads along the way.

The Subaru Solterra’s battery power was rapidly depleting, as one would expect. It is true that the car does not have a sport mode, but thanks to the excellent chassis, it encourages this kind of sporty driving, which I found rather troublesome. This may be something that should be praised, but in the case of BEVs, it was a profound reminder that if the driver enjoys driving, it will have the opposite effect. Hence, by the time we arrived at the transfer point, we were unable to keep our promise, and our remaining driving range was less than 200 km. ……

Oh no, I was going to be scolded! I thought to myself, but when I checked the battery level of the Toyota bZ4X, which I drove next, I found that it was almost the same situation, less than 200km, so it was not the fault of my driving. The fact that the former I had driven so far was also almost the same suggests that the conditions were just barely realistic. The fact that the former driver was also on the edge of the limit of the realistic conditions is a good indication that the conditions were almost the same as those of the former driver.

Switching to the “”bZ4X”” and feeling the difference in character

With this in mind, we drove the bZ4X toward Kanazawa and found it to be more comfortable than the earlier Soltera. We later asked the development team if our impression was different because this is a FWD model, and it turned out that Toyota and Subaru had intentionally changed the settings.

To put it simply, Toyota prioritized ride comfort and other amenities, while Subaru emphasized sportiness. It seems that each brand prioritizes its own characteristics, but in the case of the Toyota bZ4X, perhaps because it is FWD, the impression of “”excellent performance”” precedes the enjoyable driving experience of the Solterra, and it has the effect of making the driver drive in a relatively eco-friendly manner. This may have the effect of encouraging people to drive in a relatively eco-friendly manner.

In terms of electricity costs, the two cars differ slightly, partly due to differences in settings, but if you are serious about purchasing the bZ4X, it is the tire size that you should pay attention to. For example, in the case of the bZ4X, a comparison of the standard 18-inch tires and the optional 20-inch tires shows a difference of 47 km on a full charge in FWD, the most power-efficient mode, and a difference of 13 Wh/km in electricity consumption rate (both in WLTC mode, values published by the manufacturer). (Both in WLTC mode, values announced by the manufacturer).

Considering the essence of the vehicle, the choice between the two is obvious, but it is clear that the AWD model has its own charms that are hard to discard. The breakdown of these modes is “”SNOW/DIRT,”” “”DEEP SNOW/MAD,”” and “”Grip Control. Of course, some people may need AWD in certain areas. Also, the Solterra’s AWD is the only model with paddle shifters that can adjust the effect of regenerative braking, so if you want to enjoy driving more, the Solterra may be your choice.

Unfortunately, we were not able to drive the AWD version of the bZ4X this time, so we do not know the details of the differences between the two, but through this test drive, we could clearly see that both the bZ4X and Solterra have a high level of perfection. Toyota or Subaru, FWD or AWD, the choice is up to you, but on the other hand, there is actually a more important difference between the two companies. That is exactly what I mean by “”how to buy””.

BEVs and subs go hand in hand! The “”GR”” and “”STI”” possibilities are

While the Subaru Solterra catalog lists the vehicle price as usual, the Toyota bZ4X is KINTO or lease only. In other words, the biggest difference is that Toyota recommends subscriptions. In fact, this is the proof of the essence of BEVs. In addition to a maximum term of 10 years, with no mid-term cancellation fee required after the fifth year, the drive battery is guaranteed for 10 years, 200,000 km, and 70% of capacity during the contract period. In addition, vehicle inspections and statutory inspections are included, as well as tires and other consumable parts.

No matter how good a car is, it will eventually reach the end of its service life. In the case of electric vehicles, the disposal of used lithium-ion batteries is also an issue. If this is the case, it goes without saying that the best way to get a BEV is to purchase a SUV that is designed to be collected in advance for reuse or recycling later on. The fact that we are now in an era that suggests that there will never be a car that will be the favorite of the enthusiast who loves to choose “”a car to share his/her life with”” suggests that we must promote sustainable buying in consideration of the earth’s environment. I can say that KINTO and BEV are a perfect match.

If I asserted that, one might think that the era of “”hobbying cars”” is over, but perhaps we should expect this because there is another form of marginality left to be found in the future. After this test drive, I asked the development team if there was a possibility of a “”GR”” or “”STI”” based on the bZ4X or Solterra, and they replied that it was quite conceivable. Of course, this is only on the assumption that the demand can be anticipated, but at the very least, the key to accelerating the transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electrification is to create attractive products, and since electrification will be promoted in the world of motorsports, a BEV sports grade is a necessity considering the influence of such a vehicle. It is inevitable.

About 30,000 fast-charging units to be installed by 2030

In order to meet that day, we strongly hope that the infrastructure will be expanded as soon as possible. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, the reality is that charging facilities in Japan are still lacking. In urban areas where there are many apartment complexes, even if one wants to purchase a BEV, it is unrealistic to think about it unless the environment is ready for it. In rural areas, the charging environment is so lousy that it seems out of the question. In fact, during this test drive, there were only about a dozen charging stations along the way during the latter half of the approximately 130-km trip. Moreover, all of them were equipped with only one unit, and about half of them had an output of 20 kW.

Automakers are now desperate. The government’s support is also essential to accept them, and they are planning to install 150,000 units by 2030, of which only about 30,000 will be quick-charging units. Will this really be enough to make BEVs penetrate the market? This is the biggest challenge. Or should we expect the realization of wireless charging systems first?

Not only the author, but the wavering feelings toward BEVs are likely to continue. Even though it is claimed to go just over 500km on a full charge, this distance will not be reached without eco-friendly driving. ……

New Toyota Harrier PHEV is amazing in terms of acceleration

Toyota’s latest addition to its lineup, the “Harrier PHEV,” is generating excitement with its remarkable acceleration and distinct features. This plug-in hybrid model (PHEV) is set to hit the market in October 2022, adding a new dimension to the popular Harrier SUV.

    Distinguishing Itself: PHEV-Exclusive Design Elements

One of the standout features of the Harrier PHEV is its unique exterior design. While the regular Harrier models sport a horizontal black grille, the Harrier PHEV boasts a glossy black painted mesh grille that adds an air of sophistication to its front. Not stopping there, the PHEV version further sets itself apart with black accents on the door mirrors and rear roof spoiler. The rear bumper’s chrome molding takes on a smoked chrome hue, contributing to an exterior aesthetic that exudes both quality and presence.

The Harrier PHEV doesn’t just stop at its exterior; it showcases its identity with an exclusive “PLUG-IN HYBRID” badge and a charging port distinct from the traditional gasoline refueling port. Four unique body colors, including the exclusive “Gray Metallic,” are on offer for PHEV enthusiasts.

Step inside the Harrier PHEV, and you’re met with an interior that exudes luxury. The dark red piping ornamentation with metallic mesh textures from the instrument panel to the door trim provides an upscale ambiance. The seats are adorned with genuine leather upholstery, mirroring the top-tier “Z Leather Package” found in the regular Harrier. Moreover, the Harrier PHEV is equipped with power seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and an extra treat – heated rear seats.

Power and Performance: Under the Hood

The Harrier PHEV derives its power from a 2.5-liter engine paired with an 18.1 kWh plug-in hybrid system. This combination empowers the vehicle with an impressive total power output. With the ability to switch to electric vehicle (EV) mode, the Harrier PHEV can cover a range of 93 km in the WLTC mode. The motor contributes to enhanced driving performance, while the low center of gravity ensures outstanding handling stability.

The drive system, dubbed E-Four (four-wheel drive), features drive motors in both the front and rear of the vehicle, delivering optimal traction and control. While the fuel economy of the Harrier PHEV stands at 20.5 km/L, slightly less than the Harrier Hybrid’s 21.6 km/L, the PHEV’s ability to travel 93 km in EV mode shines as a testament to its fuel efficiency.

Embracing the Future: Features and Feedback

The Harrier PHEV takes a forward-looking approach with standard features like an external power supply system of up to 1500W (100V AC), heated rear seats, and a panoramic view monitor with an under-floor transparency display function.

Early impressions of the Harrier PHEV have been overwhelmingly positive. Enthusiasts and test drivers have raved about its light and agile start, the serene interior, and the thrilling acceleration that combines for an exceptional driving experience.

    Pricing and Perspective

Positioned as the pinnacle of the Harrier lineup, the Harrier PHEV comes with a premium price tag. At 6,200,000 yen, it stands over 1,000,000 yen higher than the highest-grade Harrier Hybrid at 5,148,000 yen. However, this premium comes with a package of exclusive design elements, advanced features, and a powertrain that seamlessly combines performance and efficiency, making it a choice that many are finding well worth the investment.

On June 27, 2022, Nissan’s European division revealed the specifications and other details of the new Qashqai e-POWER SUV, which is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in September of the same year.

Nissan fans are waiting for it! See 48 photos of the new Nissan Qashqai, the latest e-POWER SUV

Nissan’s new Qashqai e-POWER SUV [European specifications, on sale in September 2022].

The new Qashqai e-POWER is the first e-POWER (e-POWER/series hybrid) model in Europe.

Body size is 4425 mm (length) x 1835 mm (width) x 1625 mm (height) with a wheelbase of 2665 mm.

Compared to the 3rd generation EXTRAIL (overall length 4690 mm x overall width 1820 mm x overall height 1740 mm, wheelbase 2705 mm), which is Nissan’s representative SUV, it is a bit smaller in size except for its width.

The exterior features an elongated and stylish silhouette and Nissan’s family face “”V-motion grille. The emblem is a new design that was first introduced on the Nissan Aria.

The e-POWER applies the motor control technology that Nissan has developed for the LEAF electric vehicle. The e-POWER uses the on-board engine exclusively for power generation, and the generated electricity is used to drive the vehicle efficiently with 100% motor drive.

The powertrain consists of a newly developed 1.5-liter 3-cylinder VC (variable compression ratio) turbo engine (156hp/250Nm), high-power battery, generator, inverter, and motor.

VC Turbo is Nissan’s proprietary engine technology that optimally varies the compression ratio in the range of 8:1 to 14:1; it was first used in 2018 in North America by Nissan’s luxury division Infiniti, but this is the first time it is used in the Qashqai.

The system seamlessly varies from high-compression, fuel-efficient driving to a low-compression state that provides instantaneous power, depending on gas pedal opening and battery power.

Maximum system output is 190 hp (140 kW) and maximum torque is 330 Nm, with 0-100 km/h acceleration in 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 170 km/h.

Catalog fuel economy in Europe is 5.3-5.4 L/100 km (WLTP mode fuel economy/per liter is approximately 18.5-18.9 km/L).

The new Qashqai e-POWER also features the “”e-Pedal Step,”” which allows one-pedal control of starting, acceleration, and deceleration by simply depressing the accelerator pedal for easy driving.

Braking of up to 0.2G can light the taillights and decelerate the vehicle to the creeping speed range.

The launch of the new Qashqai e-POWER in Japan has not yet been determined.”

The black luster of the new Toyota Prius differs by grade

The “black luster” of the new Toyota Prius differs by grade! What is the “exclusive panel” used only on the highest grade model?

Luster” is the deciding factor for the highest grade of the new “Prius
On January 10, 2023, Toyota launched the new “Prius” hybrid car.

Comparing the top grade “Z” with other grades, the exterior appearance is slightly different.

What is the difference in “glossiness” of the new “Prius”? Subdued but different impression! See in photos

New “Prius” – Only the highest grade has a “glossy” look?

The Prius was introduced in 1997 as the world’s first mass-produced hybrid car. Since then, it has been globally deployed as one of Toyota’s flagship models.

The current model, now in its fifth generation with the full model change, was developed under the concept of “Hybrid Reborn” with the aim of creating a car that combines “a design that makes you fall in love at first sight” and “a driving experience that makes you fall in love with it.

While previous Prius models have mainly touted their low fuel consumption and high environmental performance, the new model is characterized by the addition of sporty interior and exterior features and dynamic performance as new attractions.

The simple yet intricate body shape is said to express “emotions that resonate with the senses” and “universal beauty” to be loved for a long time. The overall silhouette is coupe-like, with large 19-inch wheels and A-pillars that are more angled than the previous model.

Looking at the exterior, the top grade “Z” and the other grades have slightly different atmospheres.

The “U” grade, which is exclusively for the “KINTO” subscriber service, and the mid-grade “G” grade, which wears the same 19-inch wheels as the Z, have unpainted resin panels on the fender arch moldings and lower front and rear bumpers, as is often seen on SUVs and other vehicles.

In contrast, the Z model has these parts painted in glossy black, giving the entire exterior a glossy finish and enhancing the sense of luxury. In particular, the blacked-out area on the lower rear bumper is half the height of the bumper, making the difference even more obvious.

The side fender arch moldings reinforce the Prius’ wide-and-low styling, and the 19-inch wheels look more attractive. In addition, the B-pillar garnish is glossy as well, which differentiates the Prius from other grades as if it were the highest grade.

Since glossy panels are not available for grades other than Z, and are not available as an option, it can be said that the grade can be determined from the appearance, whether it is Z or not.

However, the exterior differences are limited to those areas, and all models are equipped with full LED lamps, air spats, and a rear spoiler.

Those who prefer the appearance of the unpainted resin panels and those who wish to customize the vehicle with aero parts after purchase may not need to stick to the glossy panels of the Z grade.

If you are considering purchasing a new Prius, it would be better to pay attention to minor differences, including such exterior differences.

The hybrid model of the new Prius will be released first, and the PHEV model is scheduled to go on sale around March 2023.

“Glitter face” The ultimate in luxury minivans! “Alphard” is a makeover! 3 luxury custom minivans with a “Lexus” face .

“The ultimate “”Gila Face”” luxury minivan! Alphard”” gets a makeover! 3 Customized Luxury Minivans with a “”Lexus”” look!

Three Custom Cars that Responded Quickly to the Cries of “”I Want to Drive a Lexus Minivan in Japan! Three Custom Cars that Responded Quickly to the Voices of “”I Want to Drive a Lexus Minivan in Japan!
In April 2019, Lexus unveiled the world premiere of the new luxury minivan LM (LEXUS LM300h) for China and other Asian countries.

Based on Toyota’s popular luxury minivan, the Alphard, the LM is an overly luxurious flagship model with its own unique awesomeness and even more upscale feel, but so far no plans have been announced for the LM’s sales in Japan.

Can you tell the difference from the “”real thing””? The Lexus LM, an ultra-luxury minivan, and its custom model.

In the midst of all this, a custom model of the Alphard, given an LM-like design, is showing signs of being in vogue.

In this issue, we present three striking “”Lexus”” face luxury custom minivans, with a focus on models exhibited at the custom car event Tokyo Auto Salon.

The new “”LM”” (LEXUS LM300h) luxury minivan, which Lexus announced in April 2019 for China and other Asian markets, has not been announced for release in Japan as of October 2022.

Genuine genuine parts installed! Work”” LM-style Alphard

Ltd., a wheel manufacturer, exhibited at its booth at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 in January 2022, a custom LM-style model based on the Alphard Hybrid’s top grade “”Executive Lounge.

The emblems, front bumper, and other parts were all transplanted from genuine LM parts, and the Lexus logo was applied to the door steps and other details.

In addition to the large-diameter Work wheels, the vehicle was lowered using the original ride-height adjustable suspension, and combined with Crest Magic’s aero system to give it an even more powerful stance.

The “”Agere”” style is a surprise! The off-road spec LM can even “”stay in the car””!

Suzuki Complete (Outclass Cars Co., Ltd.), a company that sells customized models of Suzuki vehicles, exhibited a custom car with a lifted-up version of the luxury minivan Alphard at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 in January 2022, creating a stir at the venue.

The LM-style customization, including the spindle grille, is all one-off parts machined and painted black rather than decorated with chrome.

The front and rear bumper guards and over fenders, also in black, were added, and the combination of lifted up and off-road tires gave the vehicle a unique off-road look.

The roof is equipped with the popular roof tent, making it a vehicle that can be used for overnight stays.

Two Lexus cars are connected! LM800T, a custom car created by NATS students

The “”LM800T”” is a custom car created for the Tokyo Auto Salon 2021 by the Nihon Automobile College (commonly known as “”NATS””), an automotive vocational school that attracts attention every year at the Tokyo Auto Salon venue with its unique ideas and technical capabilities.

The base of the LM800T is also an Alphard, but what is surprising is that it tows a trailer in the rear. This is a unique Lexus-style minivan with two cars connected to one another.

The towing vehicle is said to be an Alphard-like (LM-like) body molded on a trailer chassis for marine transportation and fitted with FRP.

The front spindle grille and other parts were originally made using parts for other Lexus models.

Unfortunately, the real event was canceled in 2021 due to the Corona disaster, and the LM800T became a phantom model, but in 2022, only the head car was exhibited at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2022 for over a year.
