On March 31, BMW unveiled the new i3 EV based on the new BMW 3 Series, which is scheduled to go on sale in the Chinese market in May 2022.
◆A completely different model from the current i3, which is being marketed globally
The new i3 is a model exclusive to China, and will be completely different from BMW’s current i3, which is sold globally. The new i3 for China is based on the new BMW 3 Series Sedan, in the same way that BMW’s new i4 EV is based on the new 4 Series Gran Coupe.The new i3 was developed to meet the needs of Chinese customers. Sedans are very popular there, and in 2021, the new 3 Series sedan will be the best-selling model in the Chinese premium compact segment.
The BMW Group continues to expand its lineup of electric vehicles, including EVs and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs). The latest model will be the new i3, which is scheduled to go on sale in the Chinese market in May; the BMW Group aims to have 50% of all new vehicles sold worldwide be EVs by 2030.
◆Up to 526km range on a single charge
The new i3 is available only in the eDrive35L grade, and its EV powertrain is the latest fifth-generation BMW eDrive, which was used in the BMW iX3, i4, and iX.The eDrive35L is equipped with a motor that produces a maximum output of 286hp and maximum torque of 40.8kgm. The powerful motor is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 180 km/h. The battery has an energy storage capacity of 70.3 kWh (net capacity of 66.1 kWh), enabling a range of up to 526 km on a single charge. Using the quick charge system, 80% of the battery capacity can be recharged in approximately 35 minutes.
The exterior design is exclusive to EVs. The front grille has a closed aperture design. Special wheels are fitted underfoot to reduce aerodynamic drag. BMW i Blue”” accents are used throughout.
◆Wheelbase extended by 110mm for rear seat passenger comfort
The i3 eDrive35L is based on the long-wheelbase version of the new 3 Series sedan for China. The wheelbase has been extended by 110mm to further improve comfort for rear seat passengers.The i3 eDrive35L’s body dimensions are 4872 mm in length, 1846 mm in width, 1481 mm in height, and 2966 mm in wheelbase. i3 eDrive35L’s suspension system has been tuned to match the 110 mm longer wheelbase and Chinese road conditions. The tuning was performed by BMW Brilliance’s R&D department in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. They have changed some of the components to meet the specifications of the Chinese supply chain.
The i3 eDrive35L boasts the sporty driving dynamics, long-distance comfort, and wide range of customization options of the new 3 Series sedan. The i3 eDrive35L is characterized by high levels of production quality, service quality, and long life, making it a unique product in the premium compact segment, the company says.
◆The latest BMW Operating System 8 (OS8)
The i3 eDrive35L will be equipped with the latest BMW Operating System 8 (OS8). OS8 offers several important enhancements. Remote software upgrades will also enable complex and large-scale software updates, such as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including partially automated driving. In addition, customers will be able to set their preferred date and time for the installation of remote software upgrades.The new generation of BMW “”iDrive”” will allow customers to incorporate their habits and preferences into OS8. The system is designed to be flexible, making it even easier and more convenient to use third-party apps in the car.
The system will also feature the “”BMW Digital Key””. The BMW Digital Key allows users to lock and unlock their vehicles easily and securely. The digital key can also be shared by up to five people. The powertrain can be started by simply charging the smartphone wirelessly or placing it in a special tray.”

The Last of Us? Toyota’s 2023 C-HR Dynamic Ultimate
The C-HR is a car that was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in September 2014 as a concept model, the TOYOTA C-HR Concept, and later made its official debut as a coupe-style compact SUV in December 2016.
As of December 2022, it is also sold in Japan, and a minor-changed model with exterior improvements such as enlarged front air intakes will be released in 2019.
The body size is 4385-4390 mm (overall length) x 1795 mm (overall width) x 1550-1565 mm (overall height), giving it an easy-to-manage size.
The powertrains of the C-HR sold in France are all hybrids. In addition to the 1.8-liter engine version with a maximum output of 122 hp, the GR SPORT model is equipped with a 2.0-liter engine version with a maximum output of 184 hp.
The new “Dynamic Ultimate” and “Design Ultimate” grades added in France replace the existing “Dynamic” and “Design” grades.
The Dynamic Ultimate grade retains the price of the Dynamic grade, but now comes with a variety of standard equipment, including rain-drop sensitive windshield wipers, anti-collision radar, keyless entry, and heated front seats.
Compared to the Design, the Design Ultimate now comes standard with two-tone colors and new 35-inch alloy wheels.
The Dynamic Ultimate is priced at 27,750 euros (approximately 3,930,000 yen) and the Design Ultimate at 30,200 euros (approximately 4,270,000 yen).
Speaking of the C-HR, on December 5, 2022, Toyota’s European subsidiary unveiled the C-HR Prologue, a concept car that foreshadows the next C-HR model.
